University to Give Black Students Free Tuition as an Apology For Slavery?

Western Kentucky University’s student government wants their school to pay ‘reparations’ to black students in the form of free tuition because of slavery bringing a whole new meaning to virtue-signalling.

Campus Reform reports that some senators objected to the resolutions because the “free” tuition would actually have to be paid for by other students, but failed to overcome appeals to rectify historical injustices.

The resolution also asks that a special task force be created to look into test-optional admissions and admissions weighting based on geographical location, which in theory would make it easier for black students to apply and be accepted to WKU.

Andre Ambam, one of the resolution’s authors, told the Herald that racial disparity has translated into economic disparity, inhibiting black students from attending college.

“If you really care about diversity, if you really care about inclusion, if you really care about making this campus safe and accessible to everybody, having the student government’s support of reparation[s] for black students would be amazing,” Ambam said.

“This is something that I think is more importantly about sending a clear message than it is about actually trying to strive for the institution to actually give out free tuition to everybody,” added Brian Anderson, the other author of the bill.

This comes on the heels of black students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in February demanding they be offered tuition-free housing at the University because blacks were legally barred from education during slavery and the University remains out of reach for black students today. These were blacks students at the University saying this.

Just sayin’. Here’s some more which makes me think they should just go ahead and hand out graduation slips on the street corners for no reason at all:

The resolution demands free access to the university for all black people, including former inmates. That means free tuition, free housing and no fees, Mack said. That would save a black resident undergraduate student about $20,000 a year.

The resolution goes on to call for the university to use 10 percent of donations to bolster financial aid and study the feasibility of test-optional and geographically weighted admissions.

Test-optional? Yeah, that’s gonna do a lot for blacks. I know if tests were optional for black college students and a black college grad came to my business looking for work, I wouldn’t be in a big hurry to hire them and believe me – I have plenty of blacks working for me now.

Anyway, back to Kentucky:

The Student Government Association at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky, said the measure is a recommendation to pay those students reparations for slavery, even though the U.S. abolished slavery more than 150 years ago. The resolution sends a message to university faculty and administrators that slavery is “a debt that will never be paid,” according to Campus Reform.

The resolution, which passed 19-10, also called for a special task force to research ways to make it easier for black students to apply and get accepted into the college.

The school’s website listed undergraduate tuition for campus residents during the fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters at $4,956 per semester. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 8.9 percent of Western Kentucky students during the 2013-14 school year were black. White students accounted for 76 percent of the overall student body the same year.

Student Sen. Brian Anderson, who also played a role in crafting the resolution, said: “This is something that I think is more importantly about sending a clear message than it is about actually trying to strive for the institution to actually give out free tuition to everybody.”

Sen. Lily Nellans said she also supports the resolution.

“A lot of times equality can feel like oppression for those who are losing their advantage,” she said, “but that’s not a reason we shouldn’t fight for equality.”

Not all student leaders were on board, though.

“It will disadvantage other people from getting the same education,” Sen. William Hurst told the Herald. “I am not discounting that there is an obvious disadvantage to African-American students, but this resolution would discriminate against other populations.”

I only know this: You don’t solve racism with more racism. sorry kids.

You have got to be kidding me. The least they could do is to make them prove that their US ancestors were indeed slaves. But no they won’t do that. But I’m telling you right now there better not be one dime of my tax money going to this lunacy.

As a white college grad I who paid for my education, IF YOU GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING it worth just what you paid for it. Let them bring in as many black (Slaves) as they want and replace all the white students leaving to other schools. With out their money the state will have to pay up for their actions.

How many of the students getting free tuition are former slaves?

Since they are claiming it is because their ancestors were slaves, are they going to give free tuition to the Irish who also had ancestors who were introduced to this country as slaves?

…and what about the Jewish kids whose ancestors died in gas chambers and the American Indian kids whose ancestors were forced onto reservations!!

Can’t happen, at least not constitutionally. Such a policy would include people whose ancestors were definitely not slaves, like recent African immigrants, or whose ancestors were not slaves in the U.S., such as Caribbean-descended Americans. They wouldn’t even be able to agree on a threshold amount of African ancestry necessary to qualify one as black (imagine if ancestry DNA tests showed a lot more African-descended people than we thought!).

This is a crock of crap. These blacks have you right where they want this college. There is about 1% of blacks today that even related to slaves back then. There still is slavery going on in the middle east and that’s where most of the blacks went on the slave trade. About only 15 % of the black slave trade ended up here. This slave excuse is out of control. Hopefully this college is not funded by tax payers money. They just want to bring skilled athletes for their programs. Just wrong.

      June 3, 2017 at 7:39 pm

NAACP states only 5% of entire African slave trade came to the U.S. ( not 15% )

There are no Slaves nor Slave owners today. Seems to me that many Northerners, who were not Slave owners, fought in the Civil War to free the Slaves. And, tens of thousands Northerners died for the Slaves freedom. No one wants to approach that issue. Nor are people willing to approach the issue of the Africans that sold other Africans into Slavery. Ask yourself: Is this action really going to “Unite” America or continue to divide us? Reality of the World is that there are hundreds of billions of dollars to be made by keeping this racial divide in place. Have some balance. Minimize the fear, emotions, hype, and hysteria. At the end-of-the-day, how will “AMERICA” benefit with this policy? Having lived for 70 years, my position is that the “Application of White Guilt” is not a solution.

How about white people who were part of the under ground railroad who’s lives were destroyed because they turned their back on their own race to do the right thing?

    • Henry Hall

      July 4, 2017 at 3:29 pm

Good point,….except they didn’t turn their backs on their own race, only on slave owners. And slave owners were not representative of the entire white race. remember, the first documented slave owner in America was a black man.

Nobody is more upset about slavery then white Americans. We wish everyday they had never been brought here. They have been a burden to every society that took them in and getting worse all the time.

Someone needs to stand up and let these folks know that reparations died when those slaves that were freed didn’t insist on it. I believe the statue of limitations ran out long ago and most that are screaming for this aren’t decesendants of slaves. If it isn’t reparations, it would be something else. Quit afraid of being causcasion (white) and anyone else with common sense and let the citizens know what the law is and isn’t. We do not owe anyone or any ethnic group reparations from 200 years ago. They are attacking police, looting, killing, destroying property and they want us to pay for that. They should be paying not us.

No-absolutely NOT. Not one black person now has ever been a slave. Our ancestors worked and fought hard to build our country. They got the satisfaction of living free and having conveniences we have now, which white people invemted. We paid for college to get the knowledge. Blacks have the same opportunity- but pay and work for it.

Read the darn article. It does NOT say the university agreed to this. It simply says the “student government” group voted to recommend this. Hopefully those running this university have a few brain cells and dismiss this idea.
