Alabama Lawmaker Move To Prevent More Teardowns

on

After the move in other states to remove confederate statues, an Alabama lawmaker moves to prevent the same type of teardowns from happening in their state.

New Orleans just removed the last of their confederate statues from the state. There has been a mixture of outrage and joy over the historical statues being removed. Those against the removal argue that the government is overstepping it’s boundaries by removing statues that are a huge part of our history.

You can’t just pretend that something historical never happened and then erase any remnants of it. Alabama is making sure that, just that, will never happen to their historical monuments.

From IJR:

On Friday, Alabama lawmakers approved protections for remnants of the Confederacy. According to the Chicago Tribune, in part, the measure said it:

…would prohibit the relocation, removal, alteration, renaming, or other disturbance of any architecturally significant building, memorial building, memorial street, or monument.

The protections cover anything that has stood on public property for 40 or more years. Fox News reported that changes to names or memorials installed between 20 and 40 years ago would need permission from a new state commission.

Republican State Sen. Gerald Allen, the bill’s sponsor, called the recent tear downs a “wave of political correctness.” He asserted that many of the monuments honored people who still have historic significance, aside from their personal flaws.

Alabama’s law came just after Louisiana voted for the same type of law in their state. The whole purpose is to protect the history of American, the good, the bad and the ugly. It’s all a part of history.

“What we had a civil war? What’s that?” Pretty sure we’ll start to hear this question from our young children as it’ll be erased from the history books. Right or wrong it’s our history, learn from it, deal with it, and don’t repeat it.
